Product Description

The ET2101, handheld portable low cost fibre optic cable tester, enables engineers and installers to quickly identify multi-mode fibre cables and measure losses due to bad joints, broken cables etc. The testing function allows the user to transmit a calibrated light source down a cable to another unit.

The receiving unit displays the incoming optical level on an illuminated scale capable of resolving light level to within 0.5dBm. For signal losses of 2dBm or less the ET2101 has a resolution of within 0.25dBm The ET2101 supports both testing of 50/125µm and 62.5/125µm fibres and a front panel switch allows the calibration of the light source to be adjusted accordingly to provide accurate attenuation measurements.

To overcome the problem of engineers communicating between the two terminating locations, the ET2101 incorporates a full audio facility which allows personnel at each end to simultaneous send and receive audio, just like a telephone, whilst carrying out the attenuation tests. This function not only eliminates the costly use of mobile phones during cable installation / commissioning but also makes the job of identifying individual optical fibres very easy.

The unit comes complete with an integral microphone and only requires an external earphone / headphone in order to complete the audio facility. If the overload LED flashes during use, the operator should speak further away from the unit. If the operator wishes to use an external microphone, such as would be provided on a headset, simply plug it in via the microphone jack socket in the case, this action automatically disables the internal microphone.

Receive volume can be adjusted to suite requirements via a control mounted on the side of the unit. The unit operates for over 16 hours on its own internal alkaline batteries. The ET2101 flashes its Low Power LED when battery life is reduced to approximately 30 minutes.

An optional 5VDC power supply can be plugged into the unit if required.
